The Helm’s Brewing Co Tasting Room Manager will play a key role to the success of Helm’s. The goal of leadership is for the tasting room manager to initially join the organization in this capacity but to have the strategic and leadership skills to grow into the General Manager for the organization. The tasting room manager will be responsible managing the Helm’s team, along with financial and operational objectives. This role will require strong people, management and organization skills, as well as the ability to successfully oversee the operation of two facilities (Brewery and tasting room in Kearny Mesa and tasting room in Ocean Beach). This is a great opportunity to take a leadership position in a quickly growing business and industry. Responsibilities will include:

Goals, Planning and Budgets

  • Work with ownership and management to create overarching tasting room strategy
  • Meet or exceed sales and growth goals
  • Work with leadership to develop budgets for key business areas, including operations and marketing
  • Create and adhere to an operating budget
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative results and provide weekly and monthly updates to ownership on progress, strategy and pacing
  • Work with leadership to define the strategic direction of the organization

Marketing and Sales

  • Work with marketing team to develop a cohesive and all-inclusive marketing strategy for KM and OB tasting room locations
  • Develop and maintain relationships and partnership opportunities with bars, distributors and retail managers in the San Diego region
  • Identify underserved markets and closely monitor market changes in order to stay competitive
  • Assist with sales/growth strategy for Ocean Beach tasting room to ensure it aligns with organizational goals and objectives
  • Facilitate the purchase of all merchandise and supplies for both tasting rooms
  • Identify audiences and neighborhoods that could be good communities for future tasting rooms

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Hire, train, lead, mentor and retain tasting room staff
  • Help build and maintain a fun, cohesive culture and work environment for staff
  • Hold monthly meetings with ownership, management and staff
  • Assist the brewing team in regards to resources, mentoring and quality control systems to deliver world class, award winning beers

Administration, Compliance and Control

  • Assist in day-to-day brewery operations, including purchasing, logistics, brewing, packaging and shipping
  • Ensure compliance with requirements from all licensing and regulatory/law enforcement bodies
  • Assist in the audit and review of brewery system procedures, policies and practices to ensure they remain relevant and effective
  • Assist in bottling, packaging and shipping process to effectively manage quality control and efficiency
  • Continually seek opportunities to cut costs and increase efficiencies
  • Provide administrative record and bookkeeping for day to day tasting room transactions

Functions and Special Events

  • Supervise special event management, including planning, booking, and execution of events in the function space
  • Analyze potential brew festivals for organizational participation and ROI and participate when appropriate
  • Develop special programs (e.g. beer pairing dinners, seasonal offerings) to drive traffic and sales

Job Requirements:

  • College degree or equivalent work experience
  • 3 or more years Food and Beverage experience
  • Proven success in the craft beer or similar industries
  • Very strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Established competency with
    • POS systems
    • cost control systems and routines
    • budgeting
    • basic financial accounting
    • inventory control
    • logistics, shipping and purchasing
  • Highly organized and energetic
  • Genuine enthusiasm for craft beer and craft beer drinkers
  • Flexible schedule, ability to work weekends when needed
